Orpheus in the Underworld at Epsom
Soo Wilson talks about Orpheus in the Underworld at Epsom
I became involved in Offenbach’s Orpheus In the Underworld when David Pountney somewhat daringly a version in English of a revival he was planning with Gerald Scarfe designing. I have always embraced any theatre and while I am mainly known I suppose as a playwright, I felt honoured to be asked. I feel kinship love, sex, death, boxing around the human comedy.
The last time Orpheus was staged was in Cork a few years ago, but I couldn’t make it across the pond loved to have seen the last night- the instincts of the Irish audiences towards self-congratulation (and why back onto the work. And Offenbach’s ‘Orpheus’ is as glorious as the gods it takes the mickey out of.
